Dance Initiative presents Spectrum Dance Collection, an evening of original dance and creative movement October 19 and 20, 7:30pm at the Thunder River Theatre, highlighting local women choreographers and dancers in celebration of SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) in the Roaring Fork Valley. The evening includes a selection of original, short and audience-friendly dances created and performed by experienced and talented dancers. As the name indicates, the show is a collection of original works created by dancers and choreographers from our community. Aside from the remarkable talent of these young women, the variety of styles incorporated in the pieces is what makes the evening so interesting. From classical ballet to modern, from tap to hip hop and cultural dances from Africa and Armenia, the real story behind this performance is really about the need for dancers to dance and, for many of them, to create. The African dancers, for example, are performing to a traditional rhythm from the Baga people of Guinea, West Africa. One purpose of their dance is for the dancers and drummers to show honor to their mothers. The dancing and drumming are an offering of that respect and love. Two young dancers are performing a jazz/ballet piece that portrays a betrayal of friendship with a constant battle going on between the two dancers. One soloist has choreographed a piece about overcoming the loss of a friend or family member and was inspired by a friend who recently battled leukemia. “So, dance, as is all art, portrays aspects of life. The difference is that dance is the one art form in which we ourselves are the stuff of which it is made,” said Peter Gilbert, Dance Initiative founder, and dancer. Dance Initiative was organized in 2009 to support the efforts and creativity of dancers and choreographers in our community. Tickets are $15 adults and $5 under 18.
