Harking back to its historic roots, the First Fridays on June 1st will celebrate both the local rancher vitality and the hip art scene in Carbondale. A celebration of all things Carbondale, the June First Fridays will include gun fights, cowboy poetry and a mechanical bull, and the unveiling of the Art aRound Town sculpture installation on Main Street along with a new sculpture exhibit at the Third Street Center. The first Carbondale Wild West Rodeo will take place on Thursday, June 7th and in anticipation the 4th Street Plaza will be busy with all things rodeo on June 1st including a mechanical bull and bounce house, appearances by Doc Holiday and Kid Curry, cowboy poetry, roping demonstrations, gunslingers, and more. Beginning with an artist-led public walking tour on June 1st, 5pm at 3rd and Main Street, the Carbondale Public Arts Commission (CPAC) presents its 10th annual Art aRound Town sculpture exhibit. Featuring work by 12 artists from 7 states, the rotating exhibit showcases sculptures in highly visible places within the town limits with work varying from representational to abstract. In collaboration with CPAC, the Carbondale Council on Arts & Humanities (CCAH) will host its second annual invitational sculpture show, “Feel Free to Touch 2” with a First Fridays opening reception June 1st, 6-8pm at the R2 Gallery in the Third Street Center. Featuring the work of 30 sculptors, including the dozen artists who were selected to exhibit in the Art aRound Town sculpture exhibit, most of the artists in this show are local. “These two events will most certainly pave the way as Carbondale becomes the sculpture center of the Roaring Fork Valley,” said Amy Kimberly, executive director of CCAH. Carbondale was recently named co-recipient of the Governer’s Arts Award because of its commitment to support and encourage local arts. The Third Street Center celebrates its second anniversary with birthday cake from Lisa’s Third Street Cafe, June 1st, 5:30 – 7:00 in the Calaway Room followed on Saturday with the first annual Carbondale Brews and Bread Fest sponsored by Sopris Liquor & Wine and featuring over 15 mico-brewers showcasing their seasonal summer brews.
