Beginning October 3, 2013 and continuing through December 31, tire tread inspections will be taking place throughout Garfield, Eagle, and Summit Counties to help motorists determine if their vehicle tires are safe for winter driving.
Representatives from the Colorado State Patrol and other Law Enforcement agencies will be conducting vehicle safety checks. A safety check will consist of an inspection of your vehicle’s lights, windshield wipers, and tires. Troopers will concentrate on the overall condition of a vehicle’s tires. If new tires are needed, troopers will dispense discount coupons from participating distributors in all three Counties. These events are for safety awareness only and to encourage voluntary compliance with the law; no citations will be issued.

The goal of “Operation Tread Safe” is to create awareness about having proper tires and winter equipment for vehicles prior to winter driving conditions. This will ultimately help reduce crashes and road closures during the upcoming winter months. “Throughout the years, we’ve had crashes where the primary cause of the crash was lack of adequate tire tread depth and poor tire condition,” says Captain Richard Duran. “The crashes range from minor fender benders to accidents resulting in death and many hour long road closures.” Additionally, vehicles with inadequate tread have significantly slowed the opening of roadways.
