THE GREAT DEFORMATION
How Crony Capitalism Corrupted Free Markets and Democracy
David Stockman has written a new book: The Great Deformation: The Corruption of Capitalism in America (2013). Here’s what The Washington Post had to say about it:
“What Stockman has written is a book that makes clear we are that future generation
of the past, inheritors of all the wishful thinking, simple illogic and flawed compromises
that produced the near-term benefits our parents and grandparents worried about but
ultimately wanted. And now it’s payback time.”
David Stockman is the ultimate Washington insider turned iconoclast. He began his career in Washington as a young man and quickly rose through the ranks of the Republican Party to become the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan, becoming the youngest cabinet member in the 20th century. After leaving the White House, Stockman had a 20-year career on Wall Street with Salomon Brothers and The Blackstone Group, and in 1999 started his own private equity fund. In his newest New York Times best-seller, Stockman lays out how the U.S. has devolved from a free market economy into one fatally deformed by Washington’s endless fiscal largesse, K-street lobbies and Fed-sponsored bailouts and printing press money.
At the podium, Stockman’s expertise and experience cannot be matched, and he has a reputation for zesty financial straight talk. Stockman will discuss the forces that have left the public sector teetering on the edge of political dysfunction and fiscal collapse and have caused America’s financial system to morph into an unstable, bubble-prone gambling arena that undermines capitalist prosperity and showers speculators with vast windfall gains.
