HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD

Lakewood, CO–Dozens of athletes from Aspen to Parachute will be competing in the Colorado State Track and Field meet at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. The gates open at 7:30 Thursday morning and the meet concludes on Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Marco Scutaro homered off closer Santiago
Casilla to lead off the ninth inning and lift the Colorado Rockies
past the mistake-prone San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Scutaro smacked a 92 mph fastball from Casilla (0-2) just over
the left-field wall for his first home run of the season after
Colorado blew a three-run lead in the eighth.
Troy Tulowitzki (too-loh-WIT’-skee), Michael Cuddyer
(kuh-DY’-ur) and Carlos Gonzalez each drove in a run as the Rockies
took advantage of three Giants errors to snap a four-game losing
streak.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – John Elway says he had to “sacrifice
the short term for the long term” when he used a second-round pick
on Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler rather than drafting a
player who could help Peyton Manning right away.
The boss of the Denver Broncos was joined by coach John Fox in
an hour-long conference call with 6,000 season ticket holders
Tuesday. A caller from suburban Broomfield asked Elway for his reasoning
in selecting the QB with the 57th overall pick last month, and the
Hall of Fame quarterback said he saw Osweiler as the future QB of
the Broncos. Manning signed a five-year deal in Denver after his release from Indianapolis. He missed all of last season because of a nerve injury that
caused weakness in his throwing arm.

DENVER (AP) – Three Colorado football players are joining the
National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame.
The newest members include John Wooten, an offensive guard at
the University of Colorado from 1956-1958, Greg Myers, a Colorado
State University defensive back from 1992 to 1995, and Scott
Thomas, an Air Force Academy safety from 1982-1985.
According to the College Hall of Fame, of the nearly 5 million
players and coaches who have participated in college football in
the last 143 years, just over a thousand have been inducted,
recognizing their achievements.

NEW YORK (AP) – After engineering a turnaround that landed
Indiana the No. 3 seed in the NBA’s Eastern Conference playoffs
with a 42-24 record, Pacers president Larry Bird is an easy winner
in balloting for league Executive of the Year. The Hall of Fame
player is the first person to win that honor after picking up
league MVP and Coach of the Year awards.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Roger Clemens’ defense lawyer is continuing to
try to poke holes in testimony by a key government witness in the
pitcher’s perjury trial. Former strength and conditioning coach
Brian McNamee (MAK’-nuh-mee) concedes Clemens didn’t mention
steroids when he asked for a “booty shot” while he was with the
Toronto Blue Jays in 1998 and that he just assumed that’s what
Clemens meant. McNamee testified earlier this week that he injected
the seven-time Cy Young award winner in 1998, 2000 and 2001.

CHICAGO (AP) – Former big league pitcher Kevin Hickey has died
at the age of 56 from an undisclosed cause. Hickey pitched in six
major league seasons, compiling a 9-14 record, 3.91 ERA and 17
saves in 231 relief appearances. He’d been working as a coach for
the Chicago White Sox since 2004.

ROME (AP) – Fresh off titles in Madrid, Serena Williams and
Roger Federer won their first matches of the Italian Open today in
Rome. Williams extended her winning streak to 15 matches with a
4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Russia’s Nadia Petrova (NAH’-dee-uh
peh-TROH’-vah) after Federer polished off 38th-ranked Carlos
Berlocq of Argentina 6-3, 6-4.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) – Under the category of how far can a
human being sink, police in Oceanside, Calif. report that a thief
burglarized the home of Junior Seau (SAY’-ow) on May 7, just days
after the former NFL star committed suicide. Authorities say the
crook crawled in through a doggy door in Seau’s garage before
rummaging through cabinets and stealing a $500 bicycle belonging to
a friend of Seau.

Hot Sulphur Springs–The Colorado River Cooperative Agreement was signed yesterday during a ceremony in Hot Sulphur Springs. Governor John Hickenlooper was on hand for the signing that marked a new era of collaboration between Denver Water and the Western Slope.

Basalt/Denver–The Basalt woman who was about to be deported back to her native Mexico was reunited with her family. Norma Gonzalez, who’s lived in the valley for over 20 years and raised a family, was taken into custody recently by federal immigration authorities. Last Friday, after pressure from her attorney and immigrant rights groups, ICE granted Gonzalez a one year deportation delay.

DENVER (AP) – It’s another session ending for Colorado
lawmakers, and they finish Wednesday with little to show for
returning to work. The Legislature convened its first special session since 2006 just two days ago. Lawmakers were called back to Denver by
Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, who wanted them to reconsider a
civil unions measure for same-sex couples.
But the civil unions proposal failed in a Republican House
committee, and many of the additional bills Hickenlooper asked
lawmakers to consider perished, too.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) – A wildfire in northern Colorado has
grown to nearly 1,000 acres and left a firefighter with minor
injuries. The U.S. Forest Service said Wednesday that the blaze northwest
of Fort Collins was caused by humans and the investigation is
continuing. About 200 firefighters are now fighting the blaze,
which is only about 5 percent contained.
Calls were made to 160 phones telling residents to prepare to
leave, just in case. The fire is within a quarter mile of some
homes. Forecasters also issued a red flag fire warning Wednesday
for the eastern plains. In western Colorado, firefighters expected to have a 170-acre fire between Delta and Whitewater fully contained sometime Friday. It was 80 percent contained Tuesday. That fire was started by
lightning. No structures are threatened.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Bobby Abreu (uh-BRAY’-oo) hit a three-run
double and A.J. Ellis added a three-run homer during a sixth-inning
rally Sunday that carried Ted Lilly and the Los Angeles Dodgers to
an 11-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies are in San Francisco for a quick two-game set with the Giants.

DENVER (AP) – The Denver Nuggets are one-and-done in the NBA
playoffs again. Only this ouster has a much different feel.
The young team grew up in a hurry in taking the star-studded Los
Angeles Lakers to the brink before losing a thrilling Game 7 at the
Staples Center on Saturday night. They even impressed Kobe Bryant, who said the Nuggets “showed a lot of heart.” Along with plenty of promise. Ty Lawson established himself as a bona fide difference-maker and joining him with flashes of brilliance at various points were rookie Kenneth Faried, speedster Corey Brewer, forward Danilo Gallinari, big man JaVale McGee, guard Arron Afflalo (uh-FLAH’-loh) and center Timofey Mozgov.
Al Harrington and Andre Miller provided the veteran leadership,
and they nearly pulled off the upset.

MIAMI (AP) – Chris Bosh is going to miss Game 2 of Miami’s
playoff series with the Indiana Pacers and could be out longer. The
forward suffered a strained abdominal muscle in the first half of
the Heat’s series opening win Sunday.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) – Dale Hunter is finished as coach of the
Washington Capitals after less than one full season, telling the
team he wants to return to his family in Canada just two days after
the Capitals were eliminated from the playoffs. Hunter replaced the
fired Bruce Boudreau (boo-DROH’) in November and helped the
Capitals squeeze into the playoffs where they eliminated defending
Stanley Cup champ Boston in the first round.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Bodemeister (BOH’-dee-my-stur) is heading
to Saturday’s Preakness Stakes for a rematch with Kentucky Derby
winner I’ll Have Another. Trainer Bob Baffert says the Derby
runner-up came out of that race well after losing a stretch drive
to I’ll Have Another.

UNDATED (AP) – USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo says
about 10 men’s Olympic team spots seem set “on paper,” with the
rest to be determined over two days of practice before the squad is
announced July 7. The Americans requested and were granted an
extension on the June 18 deadline to name the roster by the U.S.
Olympic Committee after four candidates were knocked out by
injuries.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The judge in the Roger Clemens perjury case
has rejected a defense motion to strike testimony from pitcher Andy
Pettitte (PEHT’-iht) on a contested conversation about human growth
hormone. Clemens former teammate testified two weeks ago that
Clemens said he had used HGH, but under cross-examination said he
might have misunderstood their conversation.

In 3A, the Rifle Bears battle the Rebels of Weld Central at Cooper Field in Rifle tomorrow morning at 10. If the Bears win, they’ll play either University or Colorado Academy at 3. All games involving the Bears will be broadcast live on the radio at 99.1 and 96.7 KMTS.

DENVER (AP) – Ty Lawson scored 32 points, fellow spark plug
Corey Brewer added 18 and the Denver Nuggets forced a Game 7 in
their first-round playoff series with a dominating 113-96 win over
the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night.
The Nuggets are one win from running the lumbering Lakers right
out of the playoffs. Game 7 in the Western Conference series is
Saturday night at the Staples Center.

DENVER (AP) – Denver Nuggets reserve center Chris “Birdman”
Andersen has been excused indefinitely from all team-related
activities after Douglas County sheriff’s deputies searched his
home Thursday as part of an investigation by the department’s
Internet Crimes Against Children unit.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms
with veteran free agent cornerback Drayton Florence, who was
released by the Buffalo Bills last week.
Florence is a 10th-year pro whose release from the Bills was
regarded as a mild surprise. He had 45 starts in 46 games during
his three-year stint with Buffalo.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)- The Philadelphia 76ers are the fifth No. 8
seed to win a first-round NBA playoff series against a No. 1 seed
after dumping the Chicago Bulls 79-78 last night as Andre Iguodala
(ihg-woh-DAH’-lah) won it with a couple of free throws with 2.2
seconds left. In his second season, coach Doug Collins has led the
Sixers to their first winning season in seven years.

BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Celtics are the next challenge for Doug
Collins and his 76ers with that second-round series starting
Saturday night in Boston. The Celtics eliminated the Atlanta Hawks
with an 83-80 win in Game 6 led by Kevin Garnett’s 28 points, 14
rebounds and five blocks and hit the go-ahead bucket with 31
seconds left.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Washington fireballer Stephen Strasburg struck
out 13 Pirates in six innings of work in the Nationals’ 4-2 win in
Pittsburgh last night. Adam LaRoche hit a two-run home run, Roger
Bernadina and Rick Ankiel (an-KEEL’) added solo shots for the Nats,
who own a half-game lead over Atlanta atop the NL East.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – More than 60 former NFL players have filed a
lawsuit in Los Angeles, joining hundreds of others who claim pro
football didn’t properly protect its players from concussions. The
lead plaintiff is Hall of Famer Art Monk, who played wide receiver

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – One of the deepest and strongest
fields in golf is in Florida for The Players Championship, where
round one is under way.
Rory McIlroy’s (MAK’-ihl-royz) No. 1 ranking is on the line at
TPC Sawgrass. The Irishman regained the top spot from Luke Donald
last week by getting into a playoff at the Wells Fargo
Championship. Donald can take it back this week. They already have
taken turns at the top six times in the last 10 weeks.

NFL-VIKINGS STADIUM
Vikes close to getting new home
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings’ hopes of a new
stadium are one affirmative vote away from becoming reality.
The House passed the stadium plan early Thursday by a 71-60
vote. Now, only a state Senate vote stands between the franchise
and the $975 million stadium the Vikings would move into ahead of
the 2016 season.
The stadium would lock in a treasured team no longer bound by a
stadium lease. But it also would go down as the one of the largest
subsidized projects in state history at a time of tight government
budgets.

TENNIS-MADRID OPEN
Madrid Open quarterfinals.
Williams improved her record to 10-0 on clay this season with
her third win on Madrid’s unorthodox blue-clay surface.

NBA PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE
Try, try again
UNDATED (AP) – The 76ers, Celtics and Lakers have a second
opportunity to close out their respective NBA playoff series
tonight after having failed to do so on Tuesday. Each has a
three-games-to-two lead entering Game 6 of the best-of-seven
matchups.
Philadelphia is home to a banged-up Chicago squad that hopes to
have Joakim Noah (JOH’-keem NOH’-ah) back after missing two games
due to a sprained ankle. And Taj Gibson says he’ll play after
leaving Game 5 with an ankle injury. The Sixers are trying to
become just the fifth No. 8 seed to win a first-round series
against a No. 1 seed.
Boston also has a chance to clinch at second-round berth at
home. The Celtics host the Atlanta Hawks.
The Lakers on the other hand are on the road to face the
desperate Denver Nuggets.

and Capitals prepare for Game 7 on Saturday evening in New York.
Washington forced the decider with a 2-1 win last night on home
ice.
The winner will face the New Jersey Devils on round two.

MLB-SCHEDULE
Let’s play 2
UNDATED (AP) – Last night’s rainout in Baltimore is beefing up
today’s light major league schedule. The Orioles and Rangers are
playing a day-night doubleheader to make it up. AL West leader
Texas sends 3-1 Colby Lewis to the mound to face 2-0 Bruce Chen of
the Birds.
The pitching matchup of the night is in New York. The Yankees
hand to ball to CC Sabathia (suh-BATH’-ee-uh) against 5-1 David
Price of the AL East-leading Rays. Tampa Bay began the day a
half-game better than Baltimore in the division race with the Yanks
3 1-2 out.
Also tonight in the junior circuit, Cleveland hosts Boston,
Toronto plays at Minnesota and Detroit is at Oakland.
The lone National League affair takes place in Pittsburgh, where
the Pirates will be looking to complete a three-game sweep of the
Nationals. Washington has dropped three straight and is just
percentage points better than Atlanta atop the NL East standings.

OLYMPICS-ROUNDUP
Flame on the way to London…Russia foils planned attack on
Sochi
ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece (AP) – The flame that will burn during
the London Games has been lit at the birthplace of the ancient
Olympics.
An actress dressed as a high priestess stood before the
2,600-year-old Temple of Hera, and after an invocation to Apollo,
the ancient Greeks’ Sun God, used a mirror to focus the sun’s rays
and light a torch.
It’s the beginning of a torch relay that will culminate with the
opening ceremony on July 27.

MOSCOW (AP) – Russia’s secret service says it has foiled terror
attack plans in the Black Sea resort of Sochi (SOH’-chee) ahead of
the 2014 Winter Games.
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee says authorities
found portable surface-to-air missiles, grenade launchers, flame
throwers, grenades, rifles and explosives in Georgia’s breakaway
republic of Abkhazia (ab-KAH’-zhee-uh).
The International Olympic Committee won’t comment on the
specific case at Sochi but says in a statement that “security is a
top priority for the IOC.”
