No Fourth of July Fireworks in Glenwood

Acting Fire Chief Gary Tillotson referenced a fire yesterday in Carbondale when he gave his recommendation to Glenwood Springs City Council not to proceed with it’s annual fireworks display. He indicated that he didn’t think seting off the public fireworks display would be a good idea, even from an alternate location. He said the Carbondale fire, started by a spark from an electrical wire, is a perfect example of how dry conditions are right now.

Last week Governor John Hickenlooper signed an executive order that prohibited the private use of fireworks, but the order does allow for public and commercial displays.

A city ordinance requires that the $20,000 budgeted for the fireworks display be used this year, meaning it can’t be added to next year’s budget.
