Rifle Man Accused of Trying to Kill Police Officer Headed to Trial

Fifty-three year old Phillip Amonette of Rifle will stand trial for allegedly trying to kill a Rifle Police officer last October. Ninth Judicial District Judge James Boyd declined to hear witness accounts Public Defender Matthew Morriss said would refute officers’ accounts of the incident, saying the tesimony was not appropriate for yesterday’s preliminary hearing and should be presented at trial.

While a trial date has not yet been set, Amonette’s next appearance in court will be an arraignment on August 9.
