SPORTS, AUGUST 31ST

PHOENIX (AP) – Miguel Montero and Justin Upton each homered and
drove in three runs, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the
Colorado Rockies 9-4 Tuesday night to tie a team record with their
11th home win in a row.
The National League West-leading Diamondbacks have won eight
consecutive overall, their longest streak since 2008, and the home
streak matches the mark set in 2000 and 2003.
Gerardo Parra had a two-run triple off Rockies starter Aaron
Cook (3-8), four of Arizona’s 14 hits and scored three runs. Upton
matched a career high with his 26th homer, a two-run shot, and Wade
Miley (2-1) pitched six effective innings in his third career
start.
Dexter Fowler homered and Colorado had 13 hits, but the Rockies
stranded nine runners.

THE OTHER DENVER QB
Adam Weber hoping to get his shot Thursday
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – The raw, shaggy-haired Denver Broncos
quarterback with Madison Avenue good looks and an impressive
college resume that includes 72 touchdown passes realizes he has
absolutely no shot now of unseating Kyle Orton or even Brady Quinn.
No, not Tim Tebow (TEE’-boh).
Adam Weber.
The undrafted free agent from the University of Minnesota also
figures he hasn’t a chance of surpassing Tebow anytime soon. After
all, he’s still waiting to throw his first pass as a pro.
That may or may not come Thursday night at Arizona in the
preseason finale.
The Broncos love what they’ve seen from Weber in his scant
opportunities in practice so far.
But the best way to ensure they can slip him through waivers and
onto their practice squad is not to expose him against the
Cardinals.

PAC-12-READY TO GO
Some Pac-12 teams facing big tests right away
UNDATED (AP) – After adding two schools, renaming itself and
landing a massive television contract, the Pac-12 is finally ready
to kick off the football season.
Arizona State and Utah get the first cracks on Thursday, playing
home games against FCS schools, while the rest of the conference
starts Saturday.
Some will face tests right away, including USC against Minnesota
and UCLA at Houston.
The big game comes Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Texas,
where third-ranked Oregon will face No. 4 LSU.
The Ducks are favorites to win the conference title again after
coming within seconds of a national championship last season, but
face a huge challenge against the talented Tigers – even without
suspended quarterback Jordan Jefferson.

COLORADO OLYMPICS
Colorado considering 2022 Olympics bid
(Information in the following story is from: The Denver Post,

DENVER (AP) – After spurning the 1976 Winter Olympics, Colorado
is once again considering a bid for the international games.
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock
are discussing ways to bring the Games to the Mile High City in
2022.
The Denver Post reports ( http://bit.ly/nA6B4f ) that a decision
by the Colorado Springs-based U.S. Olympic Committee to pull out of
bidding for future Games over a revenue-sharing dispute could
derail Colorado’s plans.
The USOC would have to submit the country’s bid to the
International Olympic Committee by 2013.
A decision will be made in 2015.
