innings and the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 12-3 on
Thursday night.Spilborghs finished a triple shy of the cycle while registering
his first four-hit games in more than two seasons. Ty Wigginton and

season-high 20 hits.

DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) – A former Georgia Tech wide receiver denies
receiving improper benefits that cost the Yellow Jackets their 2009
Atlantic Coast Conference title. The NCAA also put Tech on four years of probation on Thursday and fined the school $100,000 for violations that included problems in the men’s basketball program.
The NCAA said Tech should have declared receiver Demaryius
Thomas ineligible after he accepted $312 worth of clothing from
former Yellow Jackets quarterback Calvin Booker, who was working
for a sports agent. Thomas, now a Denver Broncos wide receiver who played at West Laurens High School, told The Courier Herald newspaper in Dublin
that while he was offered money, cars, shoes, clothing and a watch,
he never accepted anything. He says he feels bad for what happened
to Georgia Tech.

SANDWICH, England (AP) – Amateur Tom Lewis has achieved his
first goal – making the cut at his first British Open. Now he has
some other goals. The 20-year-old Englishman shook up the tournament in the first round with a 5-under 65 that gave him the share of the lead at
Royal St. George’s. He was the first amateur to lead the British
Open since 1968. Friday’s second round proved more troublesome. He shot a 74 but remains in contention entering the weekend.
Lewis says it would be nice to be among the top 15 and finish as
the leading amateur.

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) – Michael Phelps is relishing the
chance to race Ian Thorpe again at next year’s Olympics, hoping to
avenge a loss to the man who preceded him as swimming’s biggest
star. The 14-time Olympic gold medalist freely admits he hates to
lose. So news of Thorpe’s attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympics
couldn’t have come as any better motivation for training.
The Australian beat Phelps in the 200-meter freestyle at the
2004 Olympic final. Phelps said “having the opportunity to race somebody like him again – maybe in the 200 freestyle – will be super fun.”

NEW YORK (AP) – Following up on a burst of momentum in NFL labor
talks, negotiating teams for owners and players are meeting again
to try and reach a tentative deal on a new collective bargaining
agreement. Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated
Press that significant progress was made Thursday on a major
sticking point – soaring rookie salaries. That’s raised hopes an
agreement in principle is in sight Friday, though there are still
some key issues to be resolved and any handshake deal would need to
go through a significant approval process.
