DETROIT (AP) – Max Scherzer struck out 12 in eight dominant innings, rookie Quintin Berry had a career-high five hits and the Detroit Tigers beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Sunday. Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera each had an RBI double. Gerald Laird added three hits and Berry finished 5 for 5 to help the Tigers win their third straight series, all against National League teams. Jeremy Guthrie lasted only three innings for the Rockies, who have lost 10 of 11.

DETROIT (AP) – Carlos Gonzalez was a very late scratch from the Colorado Rockies lineup Sunday in Detroit. With Tigers starter Max Scherzer already warming up for the first inning, the Rockies announced that Gonzalez had been taken out of the lineup with right hamstring soreness. Dexter Fowler took his spot in the lineup. Gonzalez is hitting .335 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs this season.

MIAMI (AP) – LeBron James had 29 points and 14 rebounds and Dwyane (dwayn) Wade added 25 points as the Miami Heat beat visiting Oklahoma City 91-85 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven NBA Finals. Kevin Durant’s 25 points led the Thunder, who will be looking to even the series on Tuesday night in South Florida.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Webb Simpson carded a 2-under-par 68 in the final round and won the U.S. Open by a stroke over Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson. It’s the first major title for the former Wake Forest golfer.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) – Dale Earnhardt Jr. thanked his fans for sticking with him after ending a 143-race winless drought by taking the checkered flag at Michigan International Speedway. Junior’s last Cup win was nearly four years ago at the same venue.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Stony Brook’s first-ever appearance in the College World Series ended with the team’s second-straight loss in the double-elimination tournament. The Seawolves dropped a 12-2 decision to Florida State, two days after losing 9-1 to UCLA in the opener.

CHICAGO (AP) – Two struggling baseball teams met under the lights in Chicago, where the Red Sox beat the Cubs 7-4 in the decider of the three-game interleague series between two last-place teams. The Cubbies are 7-24 over their last 31 games and a major league-worst 22-44 overall.
