BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) – The defense has rested its case in Jerry Sandusky’s child sexual abuse trial without the former Penn State assistant football coach taking the stand in his own defense. During seven days of testimony, the jury heard from eight men who said the former coach sexually assaulted them after they met him through the charity he founded. The defense has suggested the accusers have financial motivations for their claims and were improperly influenced by investigators. Closing arguments are set for tomorrow morning.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – There’s been a trade in the NBA. The New Orleans Hornets are sending forward Trevor Ariza (ah-REE’-zuh) and center Emeka Okafor (eh-MEH’-kuh OH’-kuh-fohr) to the Washington Wizards for forward Rashard Lewis and a second-round draft pick. Okafor has never lived up to being the second pick in the 2004 draft. He averaged a career-low 9.9 points and 7.9 rebounds last season, missing time with a sore left knee.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – South Carolina has a tough road ahead as they try to become the first team since Southern California 40 years ago to win three straight NCAA baseball championships. They face Kent State in an elimination game at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, tonight. The winner will advance to play Arkansas tomorrow and will need to beat the Razorbacks twice to reach the championship round.
LONDON (AP) – Two big names in women’s tennis have not been seeded for Wimbledon. Tournament organizers left five-time champion Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters (KLY’-sturz) off the list when they announced the seeding today. It’s the first time in more than a decade that the two have been left out. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) heads the men’s list, and Maria Sharapova tops the women’s seedings for the first time.
