NBA DRAFT DAY INCLUDES WHEELIN’ AND DEALIN’

DENVER (AP) – The Denver Nuggets have traded Kosta Koufos to the Memphis Grizzlies and have also dealt their first-round pick in Thursday night’s draft to the Utah Jazz. The Nuggets didn’t want to pay another young prospect to sit on their bench. So, they traded Frenchman Rudy Gobert, whom they selected with the 27th pick, to the Jazz for cash and the 46th pick, the person said. They also traded Koufos to the Grizzlies for forward Darrell Arthur and the 55th pick, opening the way for JaVale McGee to start for them in 2013-14.

FAMILIAR FACE COMING BACK TO THE AVS

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) – The Calgary Flames traded left wing Alex Tanguay and defenseman Cory Sarich to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday for right wing David Jones and defenseman Shane O’Brien. The 33-year-old Tanguay is returning to Colorado, where scored a career-high 29 goals in 2005-06. In 13 seasons with Colorado, Calgary, Montreal and Tampa Bay, he has 249 goals and 513 assists in 922 games.

CUDDYER STAYS HOT, ROCKIES STILL LOSE

DENVER (AP) – Marlon Byrd hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and threw out a runner from right field in the ninth to lead the New York Mets past the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Thursday in a makeup game for the one that was snowed out on April 17. Meanwhile, hot-hitting Rockies’ outfielder Michael Cuddyer singled to center in the 2nd inning to extend his franchise-record streak to 24 games. The Rockies open a weekend series with the Giants tonight at Coors Field.

ELSEWHERE IN SPORTS…

CLEVELAND (AP) – Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers are scratching their heads this morning in regards to the Cavs’ first pick in the NBA Draft last night. With the first overall pick in the draft the Cavs surprised everybody by taking UNLV’s Anthony Bennett, a freshman forward who also played for the Canadian national team.

LONDON (AP) – Rain has hit Wimbledon today. The highest seed in action is men’s No. 2 Andy Murray as so many of the top names were upset losers earlier in the week.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -To say the least, Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer is off to a great start this season. He is 11-0 with a 3.05 earned run average and tonight faces the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla. Scherzer is attempting to become the first pitcher since Roger Clemens in 1986 to win his first 12 decisions to begin a season.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – There’s a good interleague matchup tonight in baseball as the Rangers host the Reds. Texas tops the American League West with a record of 46-33, while Cincinnati is 45-34 in the National League Central.

SPARTA, Ky. (AP) – This week’s NASCAR race is taking place tomorrow night at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. On tap today is the qualifying for the pole. A check of the driver standings shows Jimmie Johnson in first, by 25 points over Carl Edwards.
