SPORTS, JUNE 8TH

BOSTON (AP) – After losing Game 5 at home, the Heat went to
Boston and clobbered the Celtics 98-79 to force a decisive seventh
game in the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals tomorrow night in
Miami. LeBron James came up huge, with 45 points and 15 rebounds.

PARIS (AP) – Second-seeded Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL’)
and sixth-seeded David Ferrer (feh-REHR’) are back on court for
their men’s semifinal at the French Open after a rain delay of
nearly an hour. Nadal was holding a 6-2, 4-1 lead when play
resumed.

PARIS (AP) – Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH’-vah) straight-setted
her way into the women’s final of the French Open yesterday and
will take over at No. 1 in the world when the new rankings are
released Monday. The second-seeded Russian can complete a career
Grand Slam with a win tomorrow over 21st-seeded Sara Errani
(eh-RAH’-nee) of Italy.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) – The New Orleans Saints have made a new
contract offer to record-setting quarterback Drew Brees, according
to a person familiar with the situation. The club has placed its
one-year franchise tag on Brees, barring him from negotiating with
other teams. Brees says he wants to remain in New Orleans but has
skipped voluntary practices and this week’s minicamp while holding
out for a long-term deal.

NEW YORK (AP) – Triple Crown hopeful I’ll Have Another was on
the track early this morning for a light workout, a day before the
Belmont Stakes. Trainer Doug O’Neill sent the Kentucky Derby and
Preakness winner out around 5:30 a.m. to avoid congestion around
the barn housing the 12 horses entered in horse racing’s third
jewel.
