COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Gabriel Landeskog scored his first NHL
goal with 40 seconds left and Matt Duchene’s (DOO’-shayn’s)
shootout goal was the difference in the Colorado Avalanche’s 3-2
victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
The game was played before a crowd of 8,986, the smallest to
watch a regular-season game at Nationwide Arena.
Columbus is 0-3-1 this season. In the shootout, Milan Hejduk (MEE’-lahn HAY’-dook) matched the goal of Rick Nash, who had a goal and an assist for Columbus. Shooting second, Duchene then beat Steve Mason through the leg
pads. Semyon Varlamov (var-LAH’-mawf) slid to stop Jeff Carter’s shot
to secure the victory. T.J. Galiardi also scored for Colorado, while Radek Martinek had the other Columbus goal.
BRONCOS-NOW WHAT?
Tim Tebow now leader of a team with plenty of problems
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Tim Tebow (TEE’-boh) isn’t the cure-all
for the Denver Broncos. He brings energy, enthusiasm and excitement to a franchise sorely in need of all three, but he can’t stop the run or defend
the pass. Nor can he do anything about all the battered bodies that
have relegated run-stuffers and playmakers to the trainers’ rooms
and operating tables. Kyle Orton lost his starting job following the team’s 1-4 start, but the Broncos have been bedeviled by more than just quarterback
play in coach John Fox’s first season in Denver.
Although their special teams are solid, they’re ranked 25th on
both offense and defense, and they’re only now starting to get
healthy.
DETROIT (AP) – The Rangers can wrap up a second straight World
Series berth with a win later today in Detroit. Texas leads the
best-of-seven American league Championship Series 3-1 following
last night’s 7-3, 11-inning victory over the Tigers in the Motor
City.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis grabbed a 2-1 lead in the National
League Championship Series last night with a 4-3 win over
Milwaukee. The Cardinals will host the Brewers again tonight for
Game 4.
CHICAGO (AP) – Theo Epstein is getting another chance to pull
off a baseball miracle. A person familiar with the negotiations
tells the AP that the general manager of the Boston Red Sox, a
franchise whose 86-year World Series Championship drought ended
under his watch, has agreed to a contract with the Chicago Cubs, a
franchise that hasn’t won the championship since 1908.
SHANGHAI (AP) – Andy Roddick has earned a berth in the
quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters, beating 11th-ranked Nicolas
Almagro of Spain 6-3, 6-4. Defending champion Andy Murray of Great
Britain and Spain’s David Ferrer (feh-REHR’) also are among those
advancing today in China.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – American Brittany Lang is in a
four-way tie for the lead headed to the second round of the LPGA
Malaysia tournament after a 5-under 66 in today’s opening round.
Paige Mackenzie of the U.S. and Spain’s Azahara Munoz (MOON’-yohz)
