EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The NFL season begins tonight in East Rutherford, N.J. as the defending NFL champion Giants play host to Dallas. A year ago the Giants won the NFC East with a record of 9-7, while the Cowboys were 8-8. The rest of the first-week schedule takes place on Sunday.
NEW YORK (AP) – Andy Roddick never got his match with fourth-seed Juan Martin del Potro (wahn mar-TEEN’ dehl POHT’-roh) completed yesterday. Because of rain they will resume today with Roddick leading 1-0 in a first set tiebreaker.
UNDATED (AP) – The afternoon schedule in baseball consists of four games, two in each league. In the National League the Reds are playing host to the Phillies, while in St. Louis the Cardinals are facing 17-game winner R.A. Dickey and the rest of the Mets. In the American League, Chicago is playing host to Minnesota and Oakland is home to the Angels.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – TCU starting receiver Skye Dawson has been suspended for Saturday’s season opener against Grambling State. TCU coach Gary Patterson says the punishment stems from a violation of school policy that occurred this summer. Dawson was the Horned Frogs’ second-leading receiver last year with 45 catches for 500 yards and five touchdowns.
NEW YORK (AP) – Alabama took over the top spot in the weekly Associated Press Top 25 football poll yesterday. The Crimson Tide moved past USC, which fell to the No. 2 spot. Both teams won big last week and each has a game this weekend.
