The Wintersköl™ Committee and Aspen Chamber Resort Association have selected “Locally Grown, Internationally Known” as the official slogan for the 63rd Annual Wintersköl™ Celebration, January 9-12, 2014. The winning slogan was submitted by Tony Coia.
Entrants were asked to submit catch phrases between one and five words – short enough to fit onto a three-inch, round button – that not only embodied Aspen’s annual toast to winter, but also gave a nod to the four-day celebration’s international flare during a Winter Olympics year. There are more than a dozen local athletes vying for spots on the U.S. Olympic team in various sports for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. For the first time, the 2014 Winter Olympics will include skiing and snowboarding slopestyle as well as halfpipe events, sports that have been staples at the annual Winter X Games held annually in Aspen.
This year also marks the first two-time Wintersköl™ contest winner. Coia also won in 2008 with the slogan “Some like it Hot.”
“I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of the naming game,” said Coia. “Not only have I named Wintersköl two times now, but I also named a chair lift in Snowmass when the base was being developed. I named it ‘Sky Cab’ (tied with another person) better known as ‘Skittles Lift’ by the kids.”
Coia’s prize is one (1) pass to the 2014 FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen. His slogan will appear on buttons, in print, and other promotional and advertising materials for the celebration.
Wintersköl™ dates back to a quiet January in 1951 when local Aspenites decided to celebrate Aspen’s unique alpine lifestyle with an eclectic weekend of festivities. While it was initially intended to bring crowds to town during Aspen’s slower season, it has since developed into one of high-season’s most cherished traditions, with several events dating back all the way to the first Wintersköl™.
