Even though it looked like Eric Church would miss his own induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, things turned out very differently Thursday night in his home state. When his private engagement wrapped up earlier than expected, Eric jumped into his dad’s SUV, realizing he was only an hour and a half from Kannapolis, North Carolina, where his mother and sister were attending in his stead.
By the time he arrived at the Gem Theater, his mom was already on stage delivering his acceptance speech. Eric and his assistant quickly figured out how to scale a second story window, bursting through two backstage doors to surprise both the crowd and his mother.
The delighted audience wouldn’t let Eric leave the stage without a performance. Eric borrowed an electric guitar and delivered the perfect song– a solo version of the title track from his 2009 album Carolina.
