Joe Nichols’ new single is the title track from his new album, Never Gets Old. But the song that’s most likely to get folks talking is definitely another track.
“You know, ‘Baby Got Back’ is kind of the ‘Oh my God!’ moment on the record, like ‘What is this?’” he laughs.
“I’ve been doing it for a few years,” Joe says, explaining how rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot’s hit from 1992 came to be a staple in his live shows. “I started doing it acoustically as a kind of a joke on my band… I started it off, you know, myself with my guitar and thought, ‘This’ll knock the band back.’ Like, ‘What is he doing? He’s gone nuts!’ And they joined in and kinda started playing with me… and the crowd was going crazy, and it worked.”
From then on, Joe’s been playing his slowed-down, twanged-out take on the road.
“We played it full-band in the show the next day. And it worked again, so we’re like, ‘Well, let’s just keep doing this. This is great, the crowd loves it.’ And that was probably three or four years ago, and I never thought we’d actually end up really recording that song and putting it on a record,” he chuckles. “And it turning out so well, you know! It’s pretty funny!”
If you want to hear Joe come closer to actually rapping, you’ll have to check out another similar, wry tune on the album, called “Tall Boys.” Never Gets Old is new in stores and online today.
