Kelsea Ballerini’s Band Members Told Her It Was “Lame” to Name Her Dog “Dibs”

Kelsea Ballerini‘s new puppy is named Dibs, which also happens to be the name of her brand-new single.  But at first, Kelsea’s band members nixed the idea of her naming the dog after the song.

Kelsea insisted that the name wasn’t some kind of marketing ploy, but still, she says, “[My band members] were like, ‘Kelsea, that’s so lame. We are not going to call the dog Dibs if you name him that. No.'”

Kelsea then decided to name the puppy Knox, as a tribute to her hometown of Knoxville.  But that all changed when Kelsea went to pick up the dog from the breeder.

Kelsea recalls, “[The breeder] goes, ‘Hey, I know it’s none of my business. I know you’re gonna name him Knox, but you should really name him Dibs.’ I was like, ‘That’s a sign.'”

Ultimately, Kelsea is happy she chose “Dibs” as the pup’s name to mark this time her career, though he’s not responding to the name just yet.

Kelsea says with a laugh, “I’m telling him ‘no’ a lot, so he probably…thinks his name is No.”

The song “Dibs” is included on Kelsea’s debut album, The First Time, available now.
