Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler marks his move into the country format announcing the CMA Awards nominations Wednesday morning on ABC’s Good Morning America. While some may raise an eyebrow at Steven making country music, country star Scotty McCreery is quick to vouch for the rocker’s country credentials.

Steven was a judge on American Idol‘s 10th season when Scotty was the winner, and it’s hard to forget the profanity-laced statement Steven made when he first heard Scotty during Idol auditions.

Says Scotty, “He was all about it. Even from the first audition. I mean, you look back, it was the best one-liner from a judge in American Idol history, which can’t be repeated on radio.”

As Scotty established himself as a country singer on Idol, Steven actually showed up during rehearsals one day to give Scotty advice on how to really get the most out of his performance.

“I was like, “This is pretty sweet, pretty awesome,'” Scotty recalls. “Steven Tyler’s up here helping me out with a song. Not too many folks can say they got to experience that.”

Now that Steven is joining the country world, Scotty encourages everyone to check out his lead single, “Love Is Your Name.”

“If you listen to the song, the production on it, it’s about as country as anything out there right now, man,” Scotty explains. “Good for him for branching out and doing something different. That’s what music’s all about — being an artist is trying new things and seeing what works. Steven Tyler, he can go put out whatever he wants to do.”

Scotty is making waves of his own with “Southern Belle,” the lead single from his upcoming studio album.
