When a jokester like Blake Shelton lands a part in a film like The Angry Birds Movie, he can’t help but take advantage of the opportunity for comedy.
“I play a country-music-playing pig, which is not a big stretch for me. I know all the classic pig tunes, ‘Swinestone Cowboy,’ ‘Sty Fall to Pieces,’ ‘Stand by Your Ham,’ all of ’em,” he riffs. “You know, I’ve never played a pig before, but I am fluent in Pig Latin. So it was o-nay oblem-pray.”
The star of The Voice says the first time he laid eyes on his character Earl, it was love at first sight.
“Here’s this fat, green pig standing there on the screen that had on some chaps and cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. But the thing that sealed the deal for me was that they had put in my tattoo on this pig Earl on his arm, and they had taken the time to replace the deer tracks with actual bird tracks….They had me at that moment,” he recalls.
Not only does Blake voice one of the Angry Birds’ rivals, he also contributes the song “Friends” to the film’s soundtrack. All in all, the “Came Here to Forget” hitmaker couldn’t be more proud of the project.
“You know the movie is so much fun to watch, whether you’re an adult or you’re a kid, because there’s something in there for everybody. And for me personally, I’m still just blown away with the animation. Visually, it’s literally unbelievable. The story line is unbelievable, the jokes are so funny. It’s one of those movies that’s destined to become a classic,” he says.
Both The Angry Birds Movie and Blake’s new album, If I’m Honest, which features his song from the film, are out today.
