ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – State wildlife officers plan to set a trap in the Aspen alley where a bear swiped at an off-duty sheriff’s deputy.
The bear injured the abdomen and leg of Erin Smiddy early Sunday morning. She had to get stitches but Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Mike Porras says the attack could have been much worse. He says she was able to fight the bear off and she didn’t run away.
The bear is believed to be the same one that attracted a crowd when it was spotted in dumpster a half hour before.
The bear will be euthanized if it’s caught because it injured a person.
A few hours after Smiddy was injured, wildlife officers euthanized a [different] bear that broke into at least one condo last week.
