Multiple law-enforcement agencies were needed to deal with an apparent domestic dispute in Basalt early Sunday that could have easily ended with deadly consequences.
Basalt Police received a 911 call around 7:30 am from a man who advised them that he had been in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 82 near Emma. By the time officers arrived, the man had fled the scene, but a female driver was still in the vehicle and was arrested on DUI charges. After the arrest, the woman told officers that the man who fled, 28-year-old Dustin Brown of Basalt, had a homemade explosive device at their residence in the Sagewood area.
Basalt officers along with Eagle County Sheriff’s deputies converged on the residence and were able to locate the explosive. A bomb squad from Grand Junction was called in to dispose the device, which was later dismantled on a nearby property without incident.
Brown was later arrested by the Grand Junction Police Department and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on a previously-existing nationwide warrant. Final charges against Brown are still pending while the investigation continues.
