HWY 82 FATAL
AN EL JEBEL MAN WAS KILLED INSTANTLY IN A HIGH-SPEED HEAD-ON COLLISION YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ON HIGHWAY 82. ACCORDING TO REPORTS FROM THE COLORADO STATE PATROL, 21 YEAR OLD JOSE NACHADO ANDRADE WAS HEADING UP VALLEY INTO ASPEN WHEN HIS CAR SWERVED INTO THE ONCOMING LANES AND SLAMMED INTO A STATION WAGON. THE WOMAN DRIVING THE OTHER CAR SUFFERED MULTIPLE INJURIES
AND WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. HER INJURIES WERE NOT CONSIDERED LIFE THREATENING. AUTHORITIES SAY ANDRADE WAS ON HIS WAY TO WORK AT AN ASPEN RESTAURANT. THE CRASH NEAR MILE MARKER 25 AT WINGO JUNCTION, REDUCED
DOWN VALLEY TRAFFIC TO ONE LANE FOR OVER TWO HOURS.

DENVER (AP) – Colorado’s new governor passed on a black-tie
inaugural ball last night in favor of a Denver barbecue party at
which guests wore cowboy hats and jeans. Guests ate beef brisket
and macaroni and cheese after the Democrat was sworn in as the
state’s 42nd governor. In a nod to Hickenlooper’s experience as a
brewpub owner, the inaugural party featured more than a dozen
beers.
DENVER (AP) – Sen. Mark Udall says the assassination attempt in
Arizona against U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords could lead to a
dialing down of the national political debate’s tone. The Colorado
Democrat says the country needs to throttle back what he says has
been “over the top” rhetoric. Udall campaigned for Giffords, who
represents the same area his late father once represented.
DENVER (AP) – Quiznos says it plans to lay off 69 employees at
its corporate headquarters in Denver, starting around March 6. The
toasted sandwich chain said in a letter last week to Colorado labor
officials that the layoffs are part of a restructuring of certain
operations.
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AP) – NORAD says its
Santa-tracking program logged a record number of phone calls and
e-mails on Christmas Eve. The North American Aerospace Defense
Command says volunteers answered more than 80,000 phone calls and
more than 7,000 e-mails. In 2009, the program answered 74,000 phone
calls and 3,500 e-mails.
