Carbondale—A Silt woman who immigrated from Mexico 16 years ago has now taken refuge in a Carbondale church to avoid being deported. Sandra Lopez and her 2 year old daughter are now being sheltered at the Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist Church. They moved there last week when officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement denied her request to delay deportation. Lopez has been facing possible deportation since being arrested for criminal mischief in 2010. The charges were dropped after authorities learned one of her children mistakenly called 9-1-1 and hung up. Lopez, who has two older children, is the fifth illegal immigrant in Colorado to seek sanctuary in a church.
