Mesa County authorities teamed up with local security guards yesterday in the town of Gateway to contain and eventually arrest a man in a parked pickup who was shooting at passing cars.
The first reports of shots fired came in around 4:15 yesterday afternoon, and the security guards were the first to reach the site on Highway 141. They exchanged gunfire with the suspect and kept him pinned down until reinforcements from multiple local agencies arrived.
An emergency notifcation was sent to more than 100 nearby homes, advising residents to stay inside with their doors and windows locked until the shooter was caught.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested 54-year-old Rick Whited and took him to the Mesa County Jail. Investigators say Whited damaged one of the passing vehicles, but there were no reported injuries.
