Hanging Lake rest area will be closed this Thursday for maintenance work

GARFIELD COUNTY — On Thursday, May 21, crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the White River National Forest will be performing necessary maintenance work in order to get the Hanging Lake rest area ready for the summer season.

A new shed is being erected at the rest area and a gate installed as well as restriping of the parking area

This summer, a temporary information kiosk and gate will be placed just within the entrance of the Hanging Lake parking area. At least three US Forest Service staff will be present at the site Friday to Monday each weekend of the summer, starting May 15th and concluding September 14th. The staff will close the gate when the parking lot reaches capacity and inform visitors of alternative parking and hiking options in the area. New striping and signs will assist with traffic flow and notifying visitors of these and other changes. While this is not a new rule, signs will now be posted prohibiting semis, recreational vehicles and trailers from entering the rest area. There is not sufficient room to turn around in the rest area necessitating the restriction on those vehicles.

TRAFFIC AND RECREATIONAL IMPACTS: The rest area will be closed to vehicles for the day, however cyclists and pedestrians will still be able to access the Hanging Lake trailhead as the bike path will remain open.
