A man was shot while attempting to help a fellow motorist on Highway 13 north of Rifle over the weekend. According to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the man told deputies that he was driving to work on Highway 13 around 12:30 Saturday morning when he saw a vehicle stopped around mile marker nine with it’s emergency flashers on. One shot was fired as the man approached the vehicle, striking him in the torso.
The victim was able to drive south on Highway 13 to the Rifle bowling alley, where he met an ambulance. He was later flown to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.
Colorado State Patrol Troopers and deputies from Rio Blanco, Moffat and Garfield Counties attempted to find the suspect vehicle, but were unsuccessful. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office at 970-945-0453.
