DENVER (AP) – Organizers of an annual holiday-season charity drive are hoping to set a record Tuesday. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper challenged Coloradans to set a new record for generosity on Colorado Gives Day. That’s a 24-hour fundraiser benefitting 1,600 Colorado nonprofits. It started at midnight and runs all day today.

DENVER (AP) – Denver Mayor Michael Hancock says he is proud of students who have staged protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner but now he’s urging them to stay in school. Hancock issued his call Monday after the latest in series of walkouts by Denver-areas students.

BRIGHTON (AP) – The Republican Party in Adams County has requested recounts in two races that went narrowly for Democrats last month. The recount requests come in a commissioner race and state House contest. County GOP Chairman Gary Mikes says he suspects that invalid ballots were turned in by voters. He says he wants to make sure voter signatures belong to eligible voters.

FORT CARSON(AP) – Lawyers for a Fort Carson infantryman facing a possible a court-martial in the shooting death of another soldier when they were deployed in Jordan say the killing was an accident. Twenty-three-year-old Specialist Jeffery Page is charged with murder in the death of 19-year-old Specialist Adrian Perkins in May. The evidentiary hearing began Monday and is expected to continue all week.

DENVER (AP) – Colorado has rejected a plan by Xcel Energy to create a premium solar energy program. Xcel said its proposed Solar Connect program would enable those who can’t have solar panels on their roofs to support solar energy. But the PUC said Solar Connect would “have an unfair competitive advantage” over home rooftop solar and community solar garden programs.

RENO, Nev. (AP) – Fracking opponents plan a protest today outside the BLM office in Reno where the agency is auctioning off oil and gas leases for 100 land parcels covering 300 square miles of northeast Nevada. Conservationists, tribal leaders and others say the energy exploration using hydraulic fracturing threatens groundwater as well as habitat for fish and wildlife, including sage grouse.
