CENTENNIAL (AP) – James Holmes sat quietly in the courtroom this morning as jury selection begins in his trial for the fatal shooting of 12 people in an Aurora movie theater. The jury pool now numbers 7,000 and will be winnowed down in the weeks ahead. The death penalty trial for Holmes could last until October.

DENVER (AP) – Organizers of this year’s 4/20 marijuana festival have permits to use a central Denver park on Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19, but not on Monday the 20th. The permit requires that structures must be down by midday on Monday. Although smoking pot in public remains illegal in Colorado, police don’t plan any mass arrests.

DENVER (AP) – The Colorado state Senate has given initial approval to a bill that expands the crimes for which defendants must submit blood samples. The state Senate voted unanimously today in favor of a bill to require defendants in first-degree assault cases to undergo testing if their bodily fluids come into contact with an officer, first responder or a victim.

DENVER (AP) – Jefferson County Republicans are looking for candidates to fill an empty spot in the state House. The county GOP is inviting members of the public to apply for the seat vacated by Rep. Libby Szabo (ZAY-bo). Szabo is stepping down after being appointed to the county commission. She was first elected to the seat in 2010.
