LLAMAS KILLED BY MOUNTAIN LIONS IN WESTERN COLORADO
Grand Junction—Young, hungry mountain lions are on the prowl in Western Colorado and residents are being warned by wildlife officials to be cautious. Three llamas were attacked by what is said to be a rare pack of juvenile mountain lions on the western slope. Joe Lewandowski with Colorado Parks and Wildlife says people should keep animals in cages and pets indoors from dawn to dusk, when predators are most active. The three llamas killed last weekend belonged to Mesa County resident Fred Bolton. Lewandowski says it’s the first report of mountain lions killing livestock in the region this year. The CPW set up a trail camera on a carcass to see if the mountain lions came back.
TOUGHER COLORADO DUI LAWS ENFORCED
Denver—At least two dozen habitual drunk drivers in Colorado are looking at possible prison time thanks to the state’s tougher laws that went into effect earlier this month. Prosecutors around the state are taking it seriously, going after repeat offenders. Two months ago, Governor John Hickenlooper signed a bill into law that makes a fourth DUI a felony punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of a half million dollars. So far, the 17th Judicial District, which includes Adams and Broomfield counties, leads the state with 11 felony arrests since the law took effect. Arapahoe and Douglas County officials have arrested seven repeat DUI offenders.
