Glenwood Springs–The Hanging Lake Trail and rest area will be closed through this Friday while crews hired by Xcel Engery perform some rock-scaling activities. Traffic flow however is back to normal in Glenwood Canyon following the completion of the concrete paving project.
Carbondale–The Carbondale Fire Protection District is looking for ways to offset a 30 percent drop in property tax revenues next year. Town trustees are considering a mill levy increase to make up for the projected loss.
Snowmass–An 80-foot wide, 200-foot long mudslide took out the Campground ski run at Snowmass resort over the weekend. Officials with the Aspen Skiing Company say it’s become an annual occurrence and they’re looking at ways to fix the problem permanently.
Arapahoe Basin–Roughly 4 thousand skiers and snowboarders strapped on the equipment one more time on the 4th of July to carve a few last turns at Arapahoe Basin in Summit County. The last time A-Basin offered Independence Day skiing was 1997.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) – Fire investigators are looking for
the cause of a fire at a Fort Collins environmental laboratory over
the holiday weekend. Poudre Fire Authority officials say the fire
early yesterday sent a column of smoke over the ALS Environmental
Company lab. Fire crews quickly doused the blaze and four
firefighters who went inside the building were decontaminated at
the scene.
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – Routt County deputies say a
horse found dead in a pasture south of Steamboat Springs had
apparently been shot. A puncture wound and an exit wound were found
on the horse’s neck, indicating it was likely a shooting. Deputies
say they didn’t find any shell casings or other evidence of what
type weapon was used. The owner says she’s upset over the loss of
the 17-year-old horse named Cadillac, and hopes the shooting was
accidental.
DENVER (AP) – Democratic Senate President Brandon Shaffer is
preparing to challenge Republican Cory Gardner in Colorado’s 4th
Congressional District. Shaffer announced on Twitter and YouTube
yesterday that he plans to take on the freshman congressman next
fall. The district includes the state’s eastern edge and parts of
northern Colorado, including Fort Collins and Greeley.
