Roaring Fork Conservancy honors Robert Woods as the 2014 Robert Billingsley River Conservator at the 15th Annual River Rendezvous
July 15, 2014 (Basalt, CO)— Roaring Fork Conservancy was honored to name Robert Woods as the 2014 Robert Billingsley River Conservator during the 15th Annual River Rendezvous which took place on July 9, 2014. “It was a joy to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions Robert has made to Roaring Fork Conservancy in the last 15 years,” said executive director Rick Lofaro.
Robert was asked to be on the Rivers Council Executive Committee in 1999 and since then has served as the site manager for the River Rendezvous. He has watched the event evolve over the years and assisted in it becoming what it is today; considered one of the best events in the valley. His efforts are endless when it comes to dedicating his time — from laying out tent locations, setting up generators to ensure the “lights stay on” and the food can be cooked, building ramps, and the list goes on.
When asked what he does for River Rendezvous his reply was, “My task is to design and construct those facilities necessary to stage the annual event. Fifteen years ago, we started with two small tents, some tiki torches and a home electric generator. It has certainly changed and all for the better.”
Robert decided it was time to “give back” and became involved in community volunteer work after selling Western Sports, a sporting goods store he owned in El Jebel. He was involved in Kiwanis Club, serving as its President as well and during that same time he worked in the soup kitchen for the homeless once a month. He has been a committee member of Ducks Unlimited for 15 years and still serves on that committee. For the past 10 years Robert has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District and is presently serving as their President.
Former River Conservators are Dorothea Farris, Mark Fuller, Peter McBride, Jonathan Waterman, Rachel Richards, Ken Neubecker, Carter Brooksher, Tim Heng, Ken Kendrick, Cindy Houben, Paula Fothergill, Bill McKee, Stephen Ellsperman, Bob Lewis, Andre Wille & Mike Wilde.
