CINCINNATI (AP) – Jake Arrieta (ehr-ee-ET’-uh) has his second no-hitter in eight months. Last night in a 16-0 laugher, the Cubs ace racked up the gem as he struck out six and walked four against the Reds. The win improved Chicago to a major-league-best 12-4.
HOUSTON (AP) – With Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry watching from the bench with an injured ankle, the Golden State Warriors were beaten by the Rockets in Houston last night 97-96. James Harden hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds remaining to give the Rockets the win and a series deficit now of 2-1.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Tampa Bay is the first team to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Playing on home ice, the Lightning beat the Red Wings 1-0 to eliminate Detroit in five games. Alex Killorn scored with 1:43 remaining to give Tampa the win.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Qualifying for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race is taking place this afternoon at Richmond International Speedway. The weekend marks the return of Tony Stewart to competitive driving as he was cleared medically to return to action earlier in the week. He missed the first eight races of the year with a fractured vertebra suffered in a January all-terrain-vehicle accident.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The first round of the PGA’s Texas Open is being completed today before the start of the second round. When play was called last night because of darkness Brendan Steele was leading at 8-under through 13 holes. Charley Hoffman is the clubhouse leader following a 6-under 66, a stroke ahead of Stuart Appleby and Peter Malnati.
