‘STROS BEAT ROCKS

Denver— (AP) – J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, Carlos Pena connected for a home run as part of a three-run ninth, and the Houston Astros rallied against Colorado’s bullpen to beat the Rockies 6-3 on Wednesday night. The Astros overcame 12 strikeouts and Troy Tulowitzki’s first multihomer game since 2011 in taking the opener of a two-game set at Coors Field.

ROCKIES’ PITCHER AND OUTFIELDER TRADE PLACES

DENVER (AP) – Seeking another arm for their taxed bullpen, the Colorado Rockies recalled right-hander Rob Scahill from Triple A Colorado Springs. Outfielder Charlie Blackmon was optioned to Colorado Springs to make room for Scahill, who is up with the Rockies for a third time this season and was available for Wednesday night’s game against the Houston Astros.

BRONCOS SHORE UP SECONDARY WITH DURABLE VETERAN

ENGLEWOOD. (AP) – The Denver Broncos have signed free agent cornerback Quentin Jammer after striking out in their pursuit of safety Charles Woodson. A physical and durable 12th-year pro, Jammer is the third longtime San Diego Chargers player to bolt for their AFC rivals this offseason, joining linebacker Shaun Phillips and right guard Louis Vasquez. Jammer spent his first 11 seasons in San Diego, where he had 21 interceptions and 130 pass breakups. He was the fifth-overall draft pick in 2002 out of Texas, where he played safety.

ELSEWHERE IN SPORTS…

PARIS (AP) – A former world No. 1, Jelena Jankovic (yeh-LAY’-nuh YANK’-oh-vihch), has advanced at the French Open. The 18th seed beat a 19-year-old Spaniard in straight sets. Jankovic is a three-time semifinalist in the French Open and will now face ninth-seed Sam Stosur, who advanced with a straight-sets win as well.

CHICAGO (AP) – In case you missed it last night, the Chicago Blackhawks advanced to the Stanley Cup Western Conference final with an overtime win over Detroit. The 2-1 victory ousted the Red Wings in seven games. Brent Seabrook scored at 3:35 of overtime to send the Hawks to the conference final against the Los Angeles Kings.

MIAMI (AP) – The fifth game of the NBA’s Eastern Conference final is tonight in Miami. The Heat and Pacers have split the first four games of the series with the Heat winning games 1 and 3.The sixth game will be played Saturday in Indianapolis.

UNDATED (AP) – There are four day games in baseball today. In Arlington, Texas, the Rangers are playing host to Arizona while the Chicago Cubs are entertaining the White Sox, Seattle is at San Diego and the Giants are hosting the Athletics.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The Charlotte Bobcats have a new head coach. They’ve hired longtime NBA assistant Steve Clifford. He worked for the Lakers this season. Clifford is the Bobcats’ sixth coach since the 2006-2007 season.
