A 23 year old man is in custody in Florida, following an almost 4 month long investigation. According to a press release from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Samuel Brunelus was connected to capsules of Carfentanil, which were found near 26 year old Michael Martinez’ and 30 year old Camillo Sanchez’ bodies in a Blue Lake residence on March 24th.
Carfentanil is known to be deadly in small quantities, even following incidental skin contact.
The Sheriff’s Office said Brunelus’ arrest was the result of a coordinated investigation by local law enforcement, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, and federal drug enforcement agents. Brunelus is currently being held on a $50,000 bond in the Broward County Jail on charges of manslaughter and distribution of a schedule II controlled substance, Class 4 and Class 2 Felonies.
Eagle County Sheriff James Van Beek said following the March deaths, Eagle County Emergency Responders have been trained in the use of Narcan, which can counteract the effects of opiods like Carfentanil. Van Beek says the March incident is an example of how drug dealers have been lacing common drugs with more potent, dangerous drugs.
Anyone with information regarding the sale or distribution of illicit drugs is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
