4A GIRLS STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Carbondale—On her home course, freshman Lauren Murphy, golfing for Glenwood Spings, was the top local golfer in the state championship tournament.  Murphy’s two-day total of 159 was good for 7th place.  Melissa Steinbach, in her fourth straight state championship tournament carded an 88 on both days and in 30th place.  Rifle freshman Elly Walters came in 48th.  Wake Forest bound golfer Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy defended her 2014 state title with two-day total of 139 that included a final day at 3 under par, 69.  Cheyenne Mountain won the state team title for the third year in a row.

Denver—(AP) – Nick Hundley hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies beat Philadelphia 6-5 on Tuesday night to snap the Phillies’ six-game winning streak. Hundley lined a 1-2 pitch from reliever Justin De Fratus (0-1) into the seats in left-center. Hundley also had an RBI single in the first. Scott Oberg (2-1) earned the win by getting the Rockies out of a jam in the eighth. John Axford pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save as a steady mist began to fall.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The NBA’s Western Conference final opened last night in Oakland with the Warriors beating the visiting Rockets 110-106. Houston rocketed out to a 16-point first-half lead but could not contain league MVP Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry, who finished with 34 points, including two free throws in the final seconds. Game 2 in the series will be in Oakland tomorrow night.

ATLANTA (AP) – The Hawks and Cavaliers jump-start the NBA’s Eastern Conference final tonight in Atlanta. During the regular season the Hawks took 3 of 4 games with Cleveland. The Cavs advanced by eliminating the Bulls while the Hawks knocked off Washington.

NEW YORK (AP) – The NBA draft lottery was last night and the winning team was Minnesota. The Timberwolves, who already feature the league’s Rookie of the Year in Andrew Wiggins, will have the right to pick first in the upcoming NBA draft. It’s the first time since 2004 the team with the worst record has won the lottery.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The Lightning are hosting the Rangers in the third game of the NHL’s Eastern Conference final tonight. They split the opening two games in New York and Game 4 will be played in Tampa in two nights.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – The best-of-seven NHL Western final is even at one win apiece. The Blackhawks outlasted the Ducks in Anaheim, California, last night to win in triple overtime, 3-2. The Hawks thought they had won it on a goal by Andrew Shaw midway through the second OT, but replay officials ruled Shaw had directed the puck into the net with his head, which is a no-no.
