NEW YORK (AP) – At the U.S. Open today Serena Williams resumes her quest to become the first player since Steffi Graf (grahf) in 1988 to win all four major tennis tournaments in one year. The men’s top seed, Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich), also is back on the court today with a second-round match.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Dodgers and Giants put the finishing touches on a three-game series tonight in Los Angeles. The home team won the first two games of the set and now leads the Giants by 5 1/2 games in the National League West.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – There is an excellent pitching matchup tonight in St. Louis as the Cardinals entertain the Nationals. On the mound for Washington will be Max Scherzer while the Cards counter with Michael Wacha (WAH’-kuh). Scherzer, by the way, is a St. Louis native.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The city of Los Angeles has joined Rome, Paris, Hamburg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary, in planning for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The U.S. Olympic Committee said yesterday it will submit LA as its bid city to the International Olympic Committee. The IOC won’t make a decision until 2017, so there is no reason to hold your breath.
NEW YORK (AP) – Tom Brady, Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) and football fans in general are all waiting on judge Richard Berman. Following a meeting Monday with all the parties involved in “Deflatgate” he said he would announce a decision in the case sometime this week. Berman will determine whether the NFL properly followed its collective bargaining agreement with players when it suspended Brady for his alleged role in using underinflated footballs in the AFC championship game.
