KANSAS CITY (AP) — Baseball’s World Series gets under way this evening in Kansas City as the American League Champion Royals entertain the National League champion New York Mets. By virtue of the American League winning the All-Star Game, the Royals have the honor of hosting the first two games of the best of seven series before it shifts to New York for games 3 and 4 and if need be five. Should a sixth and/or seventh game be called for they would be played back in KC.The pitching in tonight’s opening game of the 70th World Series has Edinson Volquez going for the Royals against Matt Harvey. During the regular season each pitcher was a 13 game winner. It’s been awhile since either team walked off the field with a World Series championship. The last one for the Royals came in 1985 while the Mets were winners the next season. New York advanced with a four-game sweep of the Cubs in the NLCS while the Royals eliminated the Blue Jays in six games.
NBA-SCHEDULE
New season starts this evening
UNDATED (AP) — On the night of the first game of the World Series the NBA starts a new season. Tonight’s opening night card features three games and the two teams that met in the NBA Finals last June are both in action. In Chicago the Eastern Conference champion Cavaliers are squaring off with the Bulls while the league champion Warriors are home to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Both the Cavs and Warriors start the new season with rosters pretty much intact from last spring and each is favored by many to meet once again in the championship finale.
The final game of the night has Atlanta playing host to Detroit.
By the way, as the NBA starts its 70th season there are no fewer than seven former All-Stars heading into the season that are at least 37 years old. The group includes Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT’-skee), Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter and Manu Ginobili (MAN’-oo jih-NOH’-blee). Each of the players was drafted between 1995 and 1999. Between them they have 80 All-Star appearances, 17 NBA titles, five MVP awards and seven finals MVP awards.
NHL-SCHEDULE
Habs look for No. 10
UNDATED (AP) — The last unbeaten team in the NHL, Montreal, is looking for its tenth win of the season tonight with a game in Vancouver. The Canadiens are a perfect 9-0 and face a team they split two games with last season. Montreal had a scare at practice Monday when goalie Carey Price remained on the ice for a bit after being hit by a high, hard shot. He finished the session and coach Michel Therrien (mih-SHEHL’ TEHR’-ee-ihn) warned the team to keep its shots down. The game tonight opens a four-game road trip for the Canadiens who can equal the league record for best start to a season with ten straight wins. The record was set by Toronto in 1993-94 and equaled by Buffalo in 2006-007.Arizona concludes a five game road trip tonight with a game in Boston. The Bruins won the first meeting of the season between the teams 5-3.Carolina and Detroit have already met twice this season with each team skating off the ice with a win.The Ducks are off to a poor start with just one win and tonight they are in Dallas. The Stars are off to a 6-2 start. In other games Buffalo is skating at Philadelphia, the Devils are home to the Blue Jackets, Colorado is at Florida, the Wild are home to the Oilers and Tampa Bay is at St. Louis.
