Kubiak benches Peyton Manning for Bears game

ENGLEWOOD (AP) — Peyton Manning won’t suit up against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Broncos coach Gary Kubiak is going with backup Brock Osweiler as he tries to get his 39-year-old quarterback healthy.Kubiak said he met with Manning on Monday morning and told him of his decision — which Manning didn’t like.Said Kubiak: “I’ve never met a player who agreed to that.”Manning had the worst game of his career Sunday in Denver’s 29-13 loss to Kansas City. He completed 5 of 20 passes for 35 yards with four interceptions and had a 0.0 passer rating.Manning is dealing with a variety of ailments, including a torn plantar fascia in his foot, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.

NFL: Broncos safety T.J. Ward won’t be suspended

ENGLEWOOD (AP) — Denver safety T.J. Ward won’t be suspended over his ejection from the Broncos’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.It appeared Ward went down swinging after he was blocked by receiver Jeremy Maclin on Charcandrick West’s 80-yard touchdown Sunday.He was assessed a personal foul and tossed from the game. Afterward, he said he was worried he’d be suspended like teammate Aqib Talib was for poking a player in the eye.NFL spokesman Michael Signora told The Associated Press any additional discipline of Ward would come “as part of the standard review process.”That means he could face a fine.Last week, Ward was fined a total of $23,150 for a hit on Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton and for having his jersey untucked.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers own the league’s only perfect records following Cincinnati’s 10-6 loss to the visiting Houston Texans. Backup quarterback T.J. Yates took over in the third quarter and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins with 14:20 remaining. Yates entered the game after Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has announced this year’s rookies of the year. Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant captured National League honors after hitting .275 with 26 homers, 31 doubles and 99 RBIs. The American League Rookie of the Year is Houston shortstop Carlos Correa, who batted .279 with 22 homers, 68 RBIs and 14 steals.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers suffered their 21st consecutive loss dating to last season as Dirk Nowitzki finished with 21 points and Chandler Parson added 20 in the Mavericks’ 92-86 win over the Sixers. Philly trailed by 19 in the first half but clawed back to take an 82-81 lead before Nowtizki scored seven points over the final 3 ½ minutes. The 76ers are within five defeats of matching the NBA record for consecutive losses.

MONTREAL (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens share the NHL’s best record with the New York Rangers at 30 points apiece after the Habs erased a 3-0 deficit in a 4-3 overtime win against Vancouver. Tomas Fleischmann tied the game with 3:08 left in regulation before setting up David Desharnais (day-ahr-NAYZ’) game-winner at 3:25 of OT. Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty (pash-uh-REH’-tee) also scored for the Canadiens, who are 14-3-2.
