3A ALL CONFERENCE BASEBALL TEAM ANNOUNCED

Undated—The Coal Ridge Titans baseball team will field another talented squad next season. The Titans, who finished third in the Western Slope 3A and qualified for the playoffs, had four players named First Team All-Conference; Junior Catcher/Pitcher Tyler Slone, junior Caleb Maynard, junior Raymond Budd and senior outfielder/pitcher Nathan Nelson. Junior first baseman Hunter Gerber earned a spot on the Honorable Mention squad along with senior Jake Solinger. Roaring Fork Rams sophomore Drew Broadhurst earned First Team All-Conference for his efforts on the mound this season. Other first-teamers from the local area include John Parker and Jared Radel from Grand Valley and Basalt Longhorn juniors Michael Glen and Andres Brucker. Basalt’s Griffin Jenkins earned an honorable mention. Tom Percival, who guided the Gunnison Cowboys to the league title, was named Coach of the Year. Percival’s son, Tyler was voted Player of the Year.

ROCKIES POUNDED BY RED SOX AGAIN

Boston—(AP) -Xander Bogaerts homered to extend his hitting streak to 18 games and the Boston Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3 Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. Travis Shaw had three RBIs and Boston moved to a season-best 12 games over .500. The Red Sox have scored eight or more runs 10 times in their last 14 home games. Steven Wright (4-4) had another solid outing, giving up three runs, two earned. He has now given up three runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts. Chad Bettis (4-3) held the Red Sox scoreless through three innings but was responsible for seven runs over the next two innings before getting pulled at Fenway. The Rockies have lost six of their last seven – all on the road. The Rockies close out the series at Fenway tonight with rookie Jon Gray (1-2) while the Red Sox counter with right-hander Clay Bucholz (2-4). The Rockies come home tomorrow night to face the Nl West-leading San Francisco Giants for a Memorial weekend series.

RED SOX-BRADLEY STREAK

BOSTON (AP) – Boston Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Junior extended his hitting streak to a career-best 29 games with a single Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies. It’s the longest hitting streak in the majors this season and tied with Johnny Damon (2005) for the fourth-longest in Red Sox history. Dom DiMaggio holds the franchise record with a 34-game streak in 1949. DiMaggio’s brother, Joe, hit in 56 straight games in 1941 for the major league record.

CLEVELAND (AP) – The Cleveland Cavaliers are one win away from their second straight trip to the NBA Finals following a 116-78 blowout over the visiting Toronto Raptors. Kevin Love was the top scorer in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, finishing with 25 points while LeBron James and Kyrie (KY’-ree) Irving each added 23. DeMar DeRozan led the Raptors with just 14 points on 2 of 8 from the field.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Joel Ward scored twice and the San Jose Sharks advanced to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in their 24-season history by beating St. Louis 5-2 in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. Logan Couture (koo-TOOR’) furnished a goal and two assists for the Sharks, who led 4-0 until Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice in the final 8:21. The Blues haven’t been to the finals since 1970 and will remain the only existing franchise from the NHL’s 1967 expansion without a Stanley Cup.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – The New England Patriots are joining Tom Brady in the quarterback’s appeal of a four-game suspension for his role in the use of under-inflated footballs during the 2014 AFC championship game. The team filed a court brief with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today, saying the Patriots stand to lose their All-Pro quarterback for 25 percent of the upcoming regular season based on a severely flawed process. The Pats are trying to persuade the entire circuit to overrule the 2-1 decision that reinstated Brady’s four-game suspension last month.

UNDATED (AP) – Four more college basketball players have announced that they are staying in school and pulling their names from the NBA draft. Indiana guard James Blackmon Jr., Nebraska forward Andrew White III and Clemson forward Jaron Blossomgame are coming back for their senior seasons, while Kentucky guard Isaiah Briscoe will return for his sophomore campaign. Kentucky forward Marcus Lee also withdrew from the draft, but Wildcats coach John Calipari says the junior will transfer to a school in the West to be closer to his family.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) – Darlington Nagbe scored in the 90th minute and the United States won its next-to-last tuneup before hosting next month’s Copa America by beating Ecuador 1-0. The Americans had won just two of their previous 20 games against South American teams over the past nine years. The U.S. faces Bolivia on Saturday in an exhibition at Kansas City, Kansas, before opening the Copa tournament against Colombia on June 3 near San Francisco.
