PRO CHALLENGE CYCLE RACE

BEAVER CREEK (AP) – Janier Acevedo of Colombia won the hilly and rainy fourth stage of the USA Pro Challenge on Thursday, and Tejay van Garderen finished second to take the overall lead.  Acevedo, riding for Jamis-Hagens Berman, completed the 102.9-mile stage from Breckenridge to Beaver Creek in heavy rain in 4 hours, 9 minutes, 8 seconds.  Van Garderen, the American BMC rider who began the day in fourth place, conceded the stage win to the Colombian but was given the same finishing time.
Van Garden took a 4-second lead over teammate Mathias Frank of Switzerland. Frank finished third in the stage, 13 seconds behind.

ELSEWHERE IN SPORTS…

MIAMI (AP) – Carl Crawford drove in two runs and Yasiel Puig (yah-SEEL’ pweeg) hit a ball so far to center fielder it almost left the ballpark in Miami as the Dodgers beat the Marlins 6-0. Ian Kershaw went eight innings to get his 13th win of the season. His earned run average is a minuscule 1.72.

DETROIT (AP) – Chris Herrmann’s second RBI double of the game broke an eighth-inning tie and helped Minnesota to a 7-6 win over AL Central-leading Detroit. Detroit had trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, but rallied to tie it on Austin Jackson’s three-run homer.

CINCINNATI (AP) – Shin-Soo Choo scored the winning run in the eighth inning on Arizona’s fourth wild pitch of the game to give Cincinnati a 2-1 win. The victory was the Reds’ third in the four-game series and moved Cincinnati seven games up on Arizona in the NL wild-card race.

ATLANTA (AP) – Atlanta’s Jason Heyward has had surgery to insert plates in two places where his jaw was broken. Heyward was struck in the face by a pitch in a game with the Mets yesterday. There’s no word on how long the Braves hottest hitter will be out of the line-up.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Yankees have placed infielder Jayson Nix on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a broken left hand. He incurred the injury Wednesday night when he was hit by a pitch. He’s been replaced on the roster with reliever Preston Claiborne, who is in his third stint with the Yankees this season.
