SOCHI, Russia (AP) – The three-medal sweep in the men’s slopestyle skiing has given the United States 12 overall medals at the Sochi Olympics. That’s tied for second with the Netherlands, one medal behind Norway’s 13.  Germany has the most gold with seven.

SOCHI, Russia (AP) – Colorado’s Paul Stastny scored a pair of goals in a six-goal second period as the U.S. opened men’s Olympic hockey play by hammering Slovakia 7-1. Goalie Jonathan Quick turned aside 22 shots in the victory. Next up for the Americans are the highly regarded Russians on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Dustin Johnson made six birdies during a 5-under 66 that gave him the clubhouse lead among the earlier starters in the first round of the Northern Trust Open. That gave him a one-shot lead over a number of golfers including Italy’s Francesco Molinari and Torrey Pines winner Scott Stallings.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Oklahoma City and the Clippers will close out the first half of the NBA season tonight in Los Angeles in a battle of division leaders.  The Thunder lead the league with 42 wins including 14 in their last 16 games. The Pacific Division leading Clippers have won 14 of their last 19.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) – Outfielder Franklin Gutierrez has told the Seattle Mariners that he will not play this season because of a recurring illness. The team says the 30-year-old won’t be reporting to spring training after a relapse of the gastrointestinal problem that slowed him last season.
