SOCHI, Russia (AP) – It will be Team USA and Canada in the men’s hockey semifinals. Dustin Brown banged in a go-ahead goal late in the first period and the United States went on to dominate the Czech Republic 5-2, earning a spot in the Olympic hockey semifinals for the second straight time.  Canada advanced with a 2-1 win over Latvia. 

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) – Ted Ligety (LIHG’-eh-tee) has won the giant slalom at the Sochi Games with a dominating performance today, becoming the first American man to win two Olympic gold medals in Alpine skiing. Skiers from France took second and third place.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Derek Jeter says he decided to retire after the upcoming season because “this is the right time.”  The New York Yankees captain held a news conference today, a week after making an announcement many of his teammates said shocked and saddened them.

UNDATED (AP) – David Ortiz wants a one-year contract extension with the Red Sox through 2015 and would like to have that situation resolved pretty soon so it doesn’t become a distraction.  Boston’s designated hitter is in the final season of a $26 million, two-year contract.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Cornerback DeAngelo Hall has signed his four-year contract to remain with the Washington Redskins.  A person familiar with the negotiations says the contract is worth between $4 million and $5 million per year.
