WASHINGTON (AP) – Adam LaRoche homered, Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and Ian Desmond added two doubles and three RBIs as the Washington Nationals welcomed back Bryce Harper with a 7-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. Harper, who missed 57 games because of a torn ligament in his left thumb, went 1 for 3 with an RBI single – on Bryce Harper bobblehead night. Jordan Zimmermann (6-4) allowed two runs in six innings as Washington won its third straight. Justin Morneau had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost 12 of 14. Yohan Flande (0-1), making his second start, was charged with three runs on six hits.

DENVER (AP) – The Colorado Avalanche have acquired veteran forward Daniel Briere (bree-EHR’) from the Montreal Canadiens for right wing P.A. Parenteau (PAR’-ehn-toh) and a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft. Briere had 13 goals and 12 assists in 69 games last season. Parenteau registered 14 goals and 19 since while missing 25 games last season after hurting both knees during the year.

 

UNDATED (AP) – The U.S. World Cup team is back in action this afternoon with a match against Belgium. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals and a contest against either Switzerland or Argentina. The Americans got some good news yesterday as it was announced that forward Jozy Altidore (JOH’-zee AL’-tih-door) has been cleared to play.

CLEVELAND (AP) – The owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert, has tweeted that the club has come agreed on a long-term contract with guard Kyrie (ky-REE’) Irving. Neither side announced details, but several outlets reported that it was a maximum deal worth about $90 million that will keep him in Cleveland for the next six years.

LONDON (AP) – Unlike yesterday the weather is good today in London for play at Wimbledon. In results so far women’s third-seed Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) breezed into the quarterfinals with a straight sets win over an unseeded player while 19th-seed Sabine Lisicki advanced with a three-set win over another unseeded player.

TORONTO (AP) – There’s a day game in baseball as the Blue Jays are hosting the Brewers. Each team leads its division as the Jays top the American League East and the Brewers the National League Central.
