EMILY JOHNSON 3 ON 3 SOCCER TOURNAMENT
Glenwood Springs—The 5th annual Emily Johnson 3 on 3 soccer tournament will be played this Saturday and Sunday at the Gates Soccer Park at CMC’s Spring Valley Campus. The competitive tournament is a scholarship fundraiser named after Emily, who was killed in an ATV accident in 2008.
ROCKIES LOSE TO PADRES IN EXTRA INNINGS
DENVER (AP) – Pinch hitter Yasmani Grandal drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder’s choice grounder in the 12th inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 6-5 win over Colorado on Thursday night, snapping a six-game skid against the Rockies.
ROCKIES DRAFT STRONG-ARMED COLLEGE PITCHER
DENVER (AP) – Jonathan Gray says being drafted by the Colorado Rockies with the No. 3 overall pick puts his mind at ease on the eve of pitching in the biggest game of his career. With the draft out of the way, the hard-throwing University of Oklahoma right-hander can turn his attention toward taking the mound on Friday for an NCAA super regional opener against LSU. Gray has a chance to move the Sooners a step closer to the College World Series. Gray is having a stellar season with the Sooners, going 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA. His fastball keeps gaining velocitiy, too, with some of his pitches hitting 100 mph.

PARIS (AP) – The scene is set for the men’s final at the French Open and it has a distinctively Spanish look. The winners of today’s semifinals were third-seed Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL’), who has won the event seven times, and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer (feh-REHR’). Nadal advanced with a dramatic five-set win over top-seed Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7, 9-7.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has undergone surgery for the removal of cancer from his upper jaw. According to the doctors who performed the procedure, Kelly will have a speedy recovery and successful outcome. The 53-year-old former Buffalo star announced Monday he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma two weeks earlier.
BOSTON (AP) – Boston’s Bruins can finish off the Pittsburgh Penguins with a win tonight. The Bruins top the best of seven NHL Eastern Conference final 3-0 and tonight’s game is being played in Boston. If the Pens pull off a victory, the fifth game in the series will take place Sunday in Pittsburgh.
UNDATED (AP) – Rain has toyed around with tonight’s Major League Baseball schedule. So far three games have been postponed, Minnesota at Washington, the Angels at Boston and Miami against the Mets in New York. The Minnesota-Washington game will be made-up Sunday as part of a day-night doubleheader while the Angels and Red Sox will play two tomorrow.
CLEVELAND (AP) – Indians closer Chris Perez and his wife have been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. Police in the Cleveland suburb of Rocky River say that Melanie Perez accepted two suspicious packages and said that they were intended for her dog. Chris Perez told drug agents he had pot in his home for his personal use.
