ROCKIES EDGE DODGERS
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Jon Garland tossed six impressive innings in his Colorado debut and Michael Cuddyer (kuh-DY’-ur) hit a grand slam that sent the Rockies to a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night. Garland signed a major league contract with Colorado on Sunday after he was let go by the Seattle Mariners despite a solid spring. The veteran right-hander was immediately inserted into the Rockies’ rotation as their fifth starter and he did nothing against Los Angeles to make them question the move. Garland allowed one run and five hits with one walk and a strikeout.
Dodgers starter Aaron Harang, struggling to see through a new pair of glasses, walked his first three batters before Cuddyer launched a drive to right-center.
RAVENS-DUMERVIL
Dumervil joins Ravens, says it was time for change
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) – Three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Elvis Dumervil (DOO’-mur-vihl) says he left the Denver Broncos for the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens because he was looking to play for a winner in a different city.
Dumervil passed his physical and signed a five-year contract with the Ravens on Tuesday. The 6-foot, 260-pounder was introduced at a news conference in which he said, “Going to a winning organization was important.” He had said nothing bad about his former team. It’s just that he was ready to leave after a fax snafu led to his release from the Broncos.
Dumervil says, “I just felt it was a time to change scenery.” The Ravens welcomed him after an offseason in which they lost free agents Ed Reed, Paul Kruger, Dannell Ellerbe and Cary Williams.
