MANNING GOOD TO GO IN 2014

ENGLEWOOD (AP) – A person with knowledge of the results tells The Associated Press that Peyton Manning has passed his physical on his surgically repaired neck, clearing the way for him to play in 2014. In what was considered the final formality for his return, Manning passed the exam as required by his contract that will pay him $20 million next season, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because results of medical checkups typically aren’t announced. Manning won his fifth MVP award in 2013, when he set single-season records by passing for 5,547 yards and 55 TDs while guiding the Broncos to their first Super Bowl in 15 seasons.

ELSEWHERE IN SPORTS….

UNDATED (AP) – You can look for a new Associated Press basketball poll today. Based on last week’s results, it is safe to assume that Florida will retain its No. 1 ranking with Wichita State staying at No. 2 and Arizona three. From there, we might see some change as both No. 4 Syracuse and fifth-ranked Kansas suffered defeats last week.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Kevin Harvick had a great day of driving yesterday as he led 224 of the 312 laps in the NASCAR race held at Phoenix International Raceway. He took the checkered flag with Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. finishing second. Pole-sitter Brad Keselowski was third, followed by Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Russell Henley won the PGA’s Honda Classic in a playoff. At the end of regulation, there was a four-way tie for the lead. Along with Henley, Rory McIlroy, Ryan Palmer and Russell Knox took part in the playoff. The win is Henley’s second on the PGA Tour.

SINGAPORE (AP) – Paula Creamer (KREE’-mer) won the LPGA event in Singapore in dramatic fashion. She sank a 75-foot eagle shot on the second playoff hole against Azahara Munoz (MOON’-yohz) to win the HSBC Women’s Champions event. The victor was her first LPGA title since the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – After 14 seasons of big-league ball reliever Guillermo Mota (gee-EHR’-moh MOH’-tah) has announced his retirement. He was at the Royals camp as a non-roster invitee. The 40-year old, who did not pitch last season, played for several teams in his long career.
