RIFLE (5/4/11) — The annual Western Slope League all-star baseball game, coordinated by Rifle baseball coach Troy Phillips, will feature a contest between the 3A and 4A divisions on the day after Memorial Day, at Cooper Field in Rifle.
Since the Rifle Bears moved from 4A to 3A this season, their long and storied rivalry with Glenwood Springs High School has lost some of its ferocity — at least for current students and sports teams. The game between Rifle and Glenwood this season had no effect on either team’s playoff hopes or in the league standings. However, Rifle’s 11-6 win over Coal Ridge Wednesday, moved the Bears into a fourth-place tie with Olathe, securing a post-season spot for Rifle with two games left in the season.
The new all-star format will make teammates of the new rivals from Rifle and Coal Ridge and put them in the opposite dugout from the 4A Demons.
The game is scheduled for May 31 at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on KMTS.
